SAN FRANCISCO – In response to this week’s tragic Santa Monica accident involving an elderly driver, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Eye M.D. Association, today reiterated its guidelines for assessing patients’ ability to drive safely, pointing out that visual impairment is seldom the cause of automobile accidents involving elderly patients.
Vote Blocks Senate Debate on Medical Liability Reform; Academy Vows to Keep up the Pressure for Reform - American Academy of Ophthalmology - July 17, 2003
WASHINGTON—The American Academy of Ophthalmology expressed disappointment when the Senate last week failed to come up with the 60 votes necessary to overcome a Democratic filibuster blocking a motion to bring medical liability reform legislation to the Senate floor for debate. The final vote was 49 for, and 48 against, a motion to limit debate so that the Senate could proceed to a vote on the bill. The bill, “The Patients First Act of 2003,” S. 11, sponsored by Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.), is nearly identical to the House-passed H.R. 5, which the Academy and the AMA were key in getting passed.

Both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate have passed Medicare reform bills that could affect physician Medicare payments, as well as medical liability. A House/Senate conference committee will begin to reconcile the two versions beginning July 7, with the goal of sending a final bill to President Bush to sign before leaving for congressional recess beginning August 4.
